Main Street businesses form new ‘Shop Chamberlain’ group
108 Affinity celebrated “Food Friday” with sno-cones outside the salon. Balloons in front of Main Street businesses let shoppers know they are open late and a part of Shop Chamberlain.
Whether people are shopping at local retailers every day or feasting on locally sourced meals at independent restaurants, consumers’ interest in supporting local, independent businesses is on the rise, and a group called Shop Chamberlain is looking to help downtown business expand that interest. A group of local downtown business owners have decided it is time to have decided it is time to create a brand that would entice local consumers and tourists to shop locally.
Mollie Harmon, owner of 108 Affinity; Karri Swenson, Chamberlain Realty; and Patience Pickner, owner of Picket Fence/The Other side of the Fence, have come together to start what they think will help local downtown businesses thrive from local consumer interests and tourists arriving to the area. The idea is called “Shop Chamberlain”, which aspires to consist of unique retail stores, eateries and bars.
Every Friday of the month, downtown retail stores apart of the group will stay open until 8 p.m., allowing locals and tourists to pop-in for a visit, shop and mingle later than usual. The group is also calling the first Friday of every month “Foodie Friday”, meaning each location will host hor’derves, snacks or others kinds of treats for consumers. The group is going to start with the summer months and see where it takes off from there. Not every store will necessarily have a special that Friday, but will have the doors open until 8 p.m.
“The goal is to help people to shop locally owned and operated businesses,” said Harmon. “Not only do we want locals to see what unique shops Chamberlain offers, but also tourists who are dining in town and give them the experience of our cool and unique downtown shops.”
Currently, there are four businesses participating: 108 Affinity, Picket Fence, Fabulous Finds and Hair Expressions. The group is inviting other local downtown Chamberlain businesses to join the group. There is no membership fee and it doesn’t necessarily have to be every Friday.
Participating businesses will have a balloon outside their location when they are open late. For more information contact Mollie Harmon at 234-2334, Patience Pickner at 234-6365 or Karri Swenson at 730-6923. Find Shop Chamberlain on facebook at www.facebook. com/shop-chamberlain.
