Contest invites people to join in ‘Picturing South Dakota’

GROW South Dakota, a statewide community development nonprofit, is launching "Picturing South Dakota," a photo contest on its Facebook page.

Beginning July 15, the agency invites South Dakotans to take a photo of their favorite place or thing in their South Dakota community and submit it to the contest. In the spirit of community development, the winner will choose a non-profit of their choice to receive a $50 donation from GROW South Dakota.

Picturing South Dakota runs from July 15 through July 25. Contestants must email their photos

to and include a brief caption for the photo. GROW SD will post the photo on its Facebook page. Three finalists will be determined based on the number of "likes" the photos receive by 5 p.m. July 25, and a panel of judges at GROW SD will make the final decision of the winners. GROW SD’s Facebook page can be found at

The winner will be able to participate in GROW SD’s Pay-It-Forward program. In celebration of its 50th anniversary of helping communities, GROW SD has provided each staff member and board member $50 to donate to a community organization. The Picturing South Dakota winner will choose a nonprofit organization of their choice to receive the $50 donation from GROW SD.

The organization cannot involve religious, political, or for-profit activities. The donation may not be used for organizations that discriminate based on gender, creed, race, religion, or sexual orientation.

GROW SD also encourages South Dakotans to complete its Needs Assessment Survey, which asks questions about our communities. The agency uses the information from the survey in planning its programming. The survey can be found at

Photos entered in the contest remain the property of the contestant, but by entering the contest they allow GROW SD to use the photos in marketing and promotional activities related to the contest. GROW SD reserves the right to reject submissions for any reason.
